Pegasus – Apple iPhone Spyware

A group of hackers were able to develop a sophisticated form of Apple iPhone Spyware that exploits some unknown issues in Apple’s iOS.

The spyware, named Pegasus, secretly jailbreaks the target’s iPhone and then searches the phones resources. It is sent via a single text message which has a link that will jailbreak the phone. It is able to copy text messages, call history, trace the location of the phone, collect passwords and copy contacts, just to name a few. It is also able to activate the phone’s camera and microphone. Apple released an iOS update to fix the vulnerability that Pegasus Spyware locates.

If you think you are safe from the spyware by using encrypted messaging apps, such as iMessage, WhatsApp or Telegram, think again. The spyware, and most other spyware and malware in the market; can act as keyloggers. This enables the logging of any keystrokes on the phone. Read more here.

Some tips:

  • Do not click on links that are sent to you via SMS or Email, especially when it has been sent by someone other than a contact.
  • If it is sent by someone you know, always check with the person first to confirm they did in fact send the link.
  • It is highly advisable to update your iPhone with the latest patch released from Apple.

If you are in business and deal with sensitive information and clients, it is recommended to look into a communications upgrade to include encryption on mobile devices.
