A major cyber-attack has impacted large multinational companies around the world, including Russian mining firm Evraz and oil giant Rosneft, French manufacturing company Saint-Gobain and Danish shipping company AP Moller-Maersk. Dutch media has reported that APM Terminals has also had 17 terminals affected by the attacks, including two in Rotterdam, which is Europe’s largest port. Rosneft has issued a statement saying the oil production has not been affected by the attack. The Ukrainian government and central bank computer systems are reportedly affected, as well as Kiev’s main airport and the state power distributor Ukrenergo. British advertising firm WPP has also have been affected.
Initial reports of the attack emerged in Ukraine and from Russian news agency Ria Novosti on 27 June and the attack appears to have since spread rapidly around the globe. Europol has since confirmed that it is responding to the attack and it is extremely likely the number of affected companies or government institutions will increase in the next 24 hours.
Commentators have linked the attack to a form of ransomware that is a variant of the virus known as Petya or Petrwrap that first emerged in 2016.
Although distinct, an attack involving WannaCry ransomware in May affected more than 150 organisations, including the UK’s National Health Service, German railways and Spanish telephone firm Telefonica. NSI will continue to monitor this developing situation.
